Tuskegee Golden Tigers open 11-game Football Schedule August 26

April 21, 2006

Tuskegee, Alabama - The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers will launch an 11-game 2006 schedule August 26 when they meet the Stillman College Tigers at Stillman Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

The August 26 season-opener will be Coach Willie J. Slater’s first career start as a head coach and his first year at the helm of the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. Slater was named head football coach when Rick Comegy resigned after the 2005 season to become head coach at Jackson (MS.) State.

A native of Coffeeville, Ala., Slater has coaching experience at the University of West Alabama, the University of North Alabama, Jacksonville State University, Troy University and, most recently, Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn. As an assistant coach, his teams won five Division II national championships at North Alabama and Troy.

The 2006 11-game schedule includes ten of the 12 opponents the Golden Tigers faced last season when they finished with an impressive 11-1 record. Five of the 11 games will be played this season in Tuskegee at Cleve Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium. The Kentucky State University Thorobreds are not on the Golden Tigers’ 2006 schedule.

For the first time in school history, Tuskegee will face Langston University on November 4 at Abbott Stadium. Lane College of Jackson, Tenn., is the November 11 Golden Tiger homecoming opponent.

The Golden Tigers will meet the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the second consecutive year in the Gateway Football Classic, September 30, in St. Louis, Mo. Tuskegee defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 13-9 in their first match up in 2005.

Other opponents on the Tuskegee 11-game schedule are Miles, (September 9), Benedict (September 19), and Albany State (October 21), all 1 p.m. home games. The Albany State Rams gave the Tuskegee Tigers their only loss in 2005, 31-21.

The Golden Tigers travel to Macon, Georgia to meet Fort Valley State on September 23 and the Clark Atlanta Panthers are the October 28 foe in Atlanta.

The 71st Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic is set for 2 p.m. ET, October 7 in Columbus, GA., and the regular-season closes with the 83rd Annual Turkey Day Football Classic against archrival Alabama State November 23 in Cramton Bowl, Montgomery, Ala.
