Brown named Alcorn State head volleyball
coach

ALCORN STATE, Ms. – The Alcorn State Athletic Department
has hired Yolanda J. Brown
as head volleyball coach. Brown, who enters her first season
as a collegiate coach, played four seasons at Grambling State
(’96-’00)
and earned SWAC Player of the Year honors in 1999.
A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Brown comes to
Alcorn State after spending five years as a sales coordinator
at the Louisiana Superdome and New Orleans Arena.
In college, Brown served as a member of the Grambling State
Lady Tigers volleyball team, where she was a three-time All-Conference
and All-Tournament player. She helped guide Grambling State
to the SWAC title during the 1996 season. Brown, concluded
a successful collegiate career via earning the conference’s
top honor of SWAC Player of the Year during the ’99 season.
A member of the United State Volleyball Association, Brown’s
first coaching experience came as a volunteer coach for underprivileged
children in New Orleans at the Blue & Gold Institute. She
also provided services as a volleyball consultant to the coaching
staff of John McDonogh High School.
Brown continues to stay active in the game in the summer as
a member of the Fit with Fin Co-Ed Volleyball League in New
Orleans, where she was a member of the 2005 championship squad.
Brown resides in Alcorn State, Mississippi.
