KSU names Sterling Steward as Assistant
Director of Athletics

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State University looked to the west
coast and found the man for the job with roots from the deep-south
and "Bayou Country" to fill the Assistant Athletic
Director of Compliance position. Sterling Steward, Jr. will
be the second-in-command of Thorobred Athletics, effective
November 16, 2005.

Steward joins the KSU family from Eastern Oregon University
(EOU) – La Grande, OR, where for the past eighteen months
he was the Assistant A.D. for Internal Operations. He also
worked at Xavier University of LA. – New Orleans, LA,
for five years as an Assistant to the Athletic Director and
Director of Campus Recreation.
"I am very pleased that Sterling Steward, Jr. has accepted
the position as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance," stated
Derita Ratcliffe, Director of Thorobred Athletics. "His
enthusiasm for athletics and desire to be part of our organization
will clearly add a tremendous amount to KSU athletics. He and
his family will also be great additions to the community of
Frankfort."
At EOU, Steward was in charge of the Internal Operation which
consisted of Athletic Scholarship Management, Fiscal Affairs,
Contract Negotiations, Game Management and Facility Management.
At Xavier, Steward was in charge of the daily department
operations, including scholarship management, event management,
facilities coordinator, as well as advisor to the cheer, pom
and dance squads.
Sterling received his undergraduate (1993) and Master's degrees
(1996) in Human Performance and Recreation from the University
of Southern Mississippi.
Prior to his arrival at Xavier, Steward spent two years as
activities coordinator at Covenant House in New Orleans. Covenant
House provides shelter and services to homeless, runaway and
at-risk youth, ages 16 - 21. He also served as Residence Hall
Coordinator at University of Southwestern Louisiana and Athletic
Director at Bishop Perry Middle School in New Orleans.
Steward will be joined in Frankfort by his wife Rachael
and sons Ty and Emory.
