Tuskegee names committee to search for
new head football coach
December 14, 2005
TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY, Ala. - Tuskegee
University President, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton has formed a
search committee to recommend candidates to become the
new head coach for America’s “winningest” football
program among historically black colleges and universities.
The committee, comprised of 12 members, includes a diverse
group representing the university’s faculty, staff, student
body and the Tuskegee University National Athletic Association.
“We’ll be working hard to meet the president’s
deadline in order to successfully recruit players for the football
team,” said committee chairman Emmett L. Taylor, who
also served on the previous search committee nearly ten years
ago.
The search comes after former Head Coach and Athletic Director
Rick Comegy decided to move on to Division I-AA’s Jackson
State University in Jackson, Miss.
Although Comegy served a dual role as coach and athletic director,
the President’s Office says search efforts are specifically
for the head football coach position. “I am not committing
either way – the continuing structure or a separation
of the two – until we see the actual quality that emerges
from the process,” Payton said.
The committee is set to present Payton with a list of the
top three candidates by Jan. 12, and an announcement should
follow no later than Jan. 16.
All interested candidates have until Dec. 21, to submit materials
to Taylor located in the Office of the President.
