Alcorn State volleyball coach resigns

ALCORN STATE, Ms. – Alcorn State University
head volleyball coach Stephanie Smith officially
resigned from her position last week to take
over as the head volleyball coach and assistant
track & field coach of Dunbar High School
in Fort Worth, Texas.
Hired in July of 2004, Smith took over for
former teammate and coach Millicent Sylvan,
whom she worked for as a graduate assistant
during the 2003 campaign. Smith led the Lady
Braves to a 6-16 overall mark in 2004 and fourth
place finish in the Eastern Division and helped
Alcorn keep its string of post-season berths
alive via clinching the final seed in the East
of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
Tournament.
A 2003 graduate of Alcorn State, Smith earned
her Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and her
Masters degree in secondary education in 2004.
She was a four-year letter winner in track & field
and volleyball.
A native of Fort Worth, Smith returns to familiar
terrain at Dunbar where she attended high school.
In addition to her coaching duties, Smith will
also teach physical education.
Alcorn State is currently in pursuit of a
replacement for Smith. Resumes can be sent

position is filled.
In the meantime, assistant coach Telma O’Neal
will hold the title of interim head volleyball
coach.
