Coppin State appoints Administrator of Athletics
June 8, 2006
BALTIMORE, Md. Dr. Mary Wanza has been appointed the Administrator of
the Department of Athletics at Coppin State University.
Dr. Wanza will handle the day-to-day activities of the athletic department
with a special emphasis on budgetary matters. Wanza, who has worked at Coppin
State for 20 years, will also continue in her current role as the director
of the library.
Additionally, Dr. Sadie Gregory, the Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs at Coppin State, will oversee the student-athletes academically.
Wanza has long been involved in Eagle athletics during her tenure at Coppin
State. She served as the Chairperson of the Athletic Advisory Board as well
as having been the Executive Director of the Eagle Club.
Most recently she was the Chief Report Writer for the National Collegiate
Athletic Association certification of Coppin State, which the school received
with no conditions.
The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution¹s
athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments.
The certification process, which involves a self-study led by an institution¹s
president or chancellor, includes a review of these primary components: governance
and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; equity; and student-athlete
well-being.
Wanza was also involved in the first certification process in which Coppin
State completed.
In a related move, Alecia Shields-Gadson has been elevated from Assistant
Director of Athletics to Associate Director of Athletics.
The appointments were necessitated by the March resignation of Ron Mitchell
as the school¹s
Director of Athletics.
