UMES wins 2006 MEAC Bowling Championship

March 18, 2006

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks won their second MEAC Women’s Bowling Title with Most Outstanding Performer Jessica Worsley leading the way at the AMF Military Lanes in Norfolk, Va on Saturday. UMES won its first title back in 2000-01.

Worsley said, “It’s amazing just to be on top with your team and to have two of our bowlers in the top five for the all tournament team.”

The Lady Hawks defeat Morgan State in the double elimination baker match final. UMES needed both baker matches to beat out a strong Lady Bears team. Morgan State won the first baker match 592 total pins to 457 total pins, while UMES won the final on the last baker match with 639 total pins to 527 total pins.

Most Outstanding Coach, Sharon Brummell of UMES, stated, “It is the best feeling in the world, the last five years of hard work have paid off.”

Morgan State head coach James Brown said, “We did a fantastic job and we will use this experience for next year.”

UMES and Morgan State will now wait to see if they will receive a bid to the NCAA Championship with bids being announced on Wednesday, March 29.

This year’s tournament was different as the setup was to coincide with the NCAA setup. Each team played five team games on the first day to determine seedings for the double elimination baker brackets. There was a winner’s bracket and a second chance bracket and each team played until they lost two baker matches.
