MEAC announces Women's Basketball All-Conference Honors;
Coppin State’s Sherrie Tucker Earns Second Player of the Year Nod

RALEIGH, N.C.-The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2006 All-MEAC awards at the MEAC Tip-Off Basketball Tournament Banquet on Monday evening at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary, N.C. Coppin State forward Sherrie Tucker was selected the Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, as voted by the leagues’ Head Coaches and Sports Information Directors.

Head Coach Derek Brown, of Coppin State, was selected by his peers as the 2006 Coach of the Year.

Florida A&M’s Deidra Jones earned 2006 Rookie of the Year honors.

Tucker led Coppin State in scoring and rebounding, while averaging 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season. She also led the Lady Eagles in seven other categories. Tucker was ninth in the MEAC in scoring, tied for 15th in rebounding, 11th in field goal percentage ( .441), and 10th in minutes played (33.0 per game).

Brown, who is in his seventh year as the head coach of CSU, led his team to over 17 consecutive wins, which is the second longest streak in the nation. Coppin State also holds a streak of over 24 victories in a row over MEAC opponents. Brown guided his team to the best conference record (18-0) in the school’s history and their second outright MEAC regular season title. Coppin State is the second team in the MEAC to record an undefeated conference record. Howard’s 1996-97 team was the last team to perform the feat.

Jones led all rookies in scoring (13.4 ppg.) and free throw percentage (.653). She was sixth in the MEAC with 17 blocked shots, eighth in scoring and ninth in offensive rebounding with 66 (2.6 per game). Jones received Rookie of the Week accolades twice this season.

Joining Tucker on the All-MEAC First Team are guards Shareka Glover of North Carolina A&T, Toni Kennedy of UMES, and Tucker’s teammate, guard Rashida Suber (Coppin State). Delaware State guard/forward Raquel Collier rounded out the first team.

The All-MEAC second team consists of, last year’s Rookie of the Year, guard Rachel Butler, Bethune- Cookman guard Katie Clark, and forwards Melaney Denson (South Carolina State) and Najmah Fauntleroy (Delaware State). UMES center Kristi Veltkamp completes the second team.

Along with Jones, guards Keturah Newkirk (Bethune-Cookman), Shalamar Oakley (Coppin State), Deidra Jones (Florida A&M), Dominisha Britton (Morgan State) and guard/forward Tiffany Reid (UMES) were among the rookies chosen to the 2006 All-Rookie team.

The MEAC Basketball Tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 7-11, 2006 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. Coppin State will attempt to defend its 2005 MEAC title on Wednesday, March 8 at Noon.
