Coppin State Women's Basketball Selected
to Face Connecticut In First Round of NCAA
Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md.--The Coppin State University women's basketball
team learned that it is slated to face the No. 7 University
of Connecticut on Sunday, March 19 at the Bryce Jordan Center
in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
ESPN announced the 64 team women's brackets live on Monday
night's selection show. The Eagles (22-8) were selected as
the No. 15 seed in the University Park bracket, the winner
of which goes on to Bridgeport, Conn. for the regional finals.
The Huskies (29-4) were selected as the No. 2 seed.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 30 minutes following
the conclusion of the 7 PM contest between Virginia Tech and
Missouri.
Third ranked Maryland takes on Sacred Heart as part of the
Albuquerque regional as will California who faces St. John's
(N.Y.) in the pairings.
Coppin State finished the season with a school record 21 consecutive
victories after defeating Delaware State for their second straight
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship. Head Coach Derek
Brown earned MEAC Coach of the Year and Most Outstanding Coach
of the Tournament for the second year in a row, while Sherrie
Tucker was named MEAC Player of the Year for a second consecutive
year.
Rashida Suber was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding
performer after being named to the All-MEAC first team and
was joined on the All-Tournament team by co-captain Talia Sutton.
The Eagles have the second longest winning streak in the nation
and are the national statistics leader in field goal percentage
defense, holding opponents to shooting just .339 from the floor.
They also stand No. 6 nationally in scoring defense by giving
up only 52.7 points per game.
Connecticut finished second in the Big East during the regular
season but went on to win the Big East Tournament to earn the
automatic bid.
