ESPNU to televise 2005 Walt Disney World Florida Classic
on November 19
October 13, 2005
ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will televise the 2005 Walt Disney
World Florida Classic on Saturday, Nov. 19 live at 3:30 p.m. ET, its first-ever
live national telecast of the 26th annual event. The yearly November college
football matchup, held at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, showcases
two prominent Historically Black College/University (HBCU) schools from the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Bethune-Cookman College and Florida
A&M University, in an intra-state rivalry that dates back to 1925.
"This game is another great illustration of the quality and variety
of programming that is available on ESPNU," said Burke Magnus, vice president
and general manager, ESPNU. "Televising the 2005 Walt Disney World Florida
Classic also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to HBCU fans by providing
a national platform to capture the great rivalry and tradition that exists
between these two great institutions. ESPNU is clearly positioned as the leader
in the multi-media distribution of HBCU sports, delivering on its promise to
service every aspect of the college sports community."
The Walt Disney World Florida Classic has attracted sellout crowds of more
than 70,000 fans each of the past six years. The event also includes a pre-game
and halftime show featuring the popular marching bands from both schools. Florida
A&M leads the Classic series, 16 games to nine. However, the last three
years Bethune-Cookman has been the victor, including a 58-52 overtime win over
the Rattlers in 2004.
