FSU to induct seven into Athletic Hall
of Fame

Fayetteville State University
will induct seven individuals into the University’s
Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 14
at the Fayetteville Plaza Hotel. The Fayetteville
Plaza Hotel is located at the I-95 Exit 53. The Athletic Hall
of Fame class of 2005 includes Tony Baldwin, a 1979 graduate,
was a talented football player. He earned letters his four
years and Honorable Mention All-CIAA in 1978 and was team’s
captain in 1979, Marion Crowe, Jr., a 1985 graduate and Sports
Information Director since 1993. Crowe has not only worked
tirelessly in his duties as SID but has been instrumental in
strengthening the academic and educational pipeline for student-athletes
and athletic support personal.
A 1985 graduate of FSU, Azriah Ellerbe, III was a member of
both basketball and football teams. Following graduation Ellerbe
worked for 34-years in the field of education, teaching and
coaching, Haywood Earl Sharpe was a member of the 1966 football
and captain of the 1968 swimming team, Paige P. Saunders came
to Fayetteville State University in 1958 where he coached basketball,
football and tennis, Warren Turner graduate from FSU in 1988
with a B.S. in political science. He played cornerback on the
football and never gave up a touchdown during his four years
as a starter. He served on the Charlotte City Council and employed
with the State of North Carolina Department of Corrections.
A 1986 graduate of Fayetteville State Kevin Wardlaw was an
outstand football and track standout. He played both quarterback
and defensive back in 1982 and 1983 and wide receiver in 1984.
He is actively involved in sports, coaching youth and middle
school football. He is a television news photojournalist and
has received numerous media awards.
On Saturday, October 15, Hall of Fame members will have a
group picture taken in Luther “Nick” Jeralds Athletic
Complex prior to Saturday’s game. This will be followed
by a pre-game reception. The new inductees will be recognized
and introduced during halftime of the football game between
Johnson C. Smith University and Fayetteville State University.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
