MEAC announces preseason basketball predictions

VIRGINIA, BEACH, Va. – The Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference
has announced its pre-season basketball predictions.
South Carolina State was chosen as the men’s favorite
while Coppin State was chosen by the league’s Head Coaches
and Sports Information Directors as the women’s favorite
to win the 2005-06 MEAC title.
South Carolina State received 10 of the 20 first place votes
and were chosen over last year’s MEAC Champions Delaware
State. The Bulldogs were listed atop the preseason poll last
season and finished the 2004-05 year in a tie for fourth place
with Norfolk State and Morgan State in the MEAC final standings.
Delaware State received six first place votes and tied with
Hampton for second place. Norfolk State, and Florida A&M
rounded out the top five places.
For the women, Coppin State finished atop the poll with 10
first place votes followed Hampton with seven first place votes
and Howard with two first place votes. The Lady Eagles finished
the year as both MEAC regular season and tournament champions.
Delaware State and UMES rounded out the top five with UMES
also earning one first place vote.
Full practices begin on October 14-15. Bethune-Cookman College
will open the 2005-06 MEAC season November 8-9 at the Coaches
vs. Cancer Tournament at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY.
Defending men’s champion Delaware State opens its 2005-06
campaign at UCLA on September 19.
On the women’s side, five of 11 schools will play their
first games of the season in tournaments, November 18-19. Coppin
State, the 2004-05 MEAC regular-season and tournament champion
will open the season on November 22 at Bucknell.
