Albany State vs. Southern football game cancelled

September 23, 2005

The Albany State University football game at Southern University, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, has been cancelled. Citing safety and travel concerns related to Hurricane Rita, ASU Athletics Director Dr. John I. Davis said canceling the game was the best decision.

“We felt ground transportation for us was a concern,” Davis said.  “I think we practiced common sense concerning what we know about the history of what Hurricane Katrina did. I think we made an informed decision.”

Albany State and Southern agreed to play this season after Savannah State University opted not to play Albany State in the annual Music City Classic. The cancellation now leaves the Golden Rams with nine football games, including a big SIAC match-up this weekend with the Tuskegee University Tigers, and Southern with their second cancelled or postponed game. The Jaguars postponed their season opener on Sept. 3 against McNeese State University because of Hurricane Katrina.

Fans who purchased tickets in Albany for the ASU-Southern game need to contact the ASU Business Office at 229-430-4610.

The Golden Rams are now preparing for their home game against Tuskegee, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in Albany.
