Howard University’s Football Program To Move in New Direction; Ray Petty’s Contract Not Renewed

Washington, D.C., – Howard University Head Football Coach Ray Petty has been notified that his current contract will not be renewed for the 2006-2007 season. Petty, who completed his fifth season as head coach, led the Bison to a 5-6 record and 4-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and compiled a 25-30 mark during his tenure which featured 6-5 records in both 2002 and 2004.

“We thank Coach Petty for his many contributions to advance Howard University’s football program during his five-year tenure,” said Dwight Datcher, athletic director. “After careful review and consideration, we have decided to progress to a different direction to position the University’s team to the next level.”
Having served as an assistant football coach at Howard from 1992-1999, Petty returned to the University in 2002 to commence his first head coaching position. He has also served as assistant coach at several Historically Black Colleges and Universities including Southern University (1988-90), North Carolina A&T (1982-88), and Norfolk State (2000-02).
