Miles names Christopher Giles as men’s
basketball coach

Miles College, through Director of Athletics Augustus James,
has announced the appointment of Christopher Len Giles, former
assistant coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
as the Golden Bears'
new head men’s basketball coach. Giles replaces Roosevelt
Sanders who was released at the conclusion of the 2005-06 season.

Giles spent the last four years as an assistant coach at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, helping to guide the Blazer
teams to an overall record of 89-41, which includes a Conference
USA Regular-Season Championship in 2004, three straight postseason
appearances, including back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, reached
the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2004, upset of SEC West Champ
LSU in the 2005 NCAA Tournament and an appeared in the NIT
quarterfinals in 2003.
Giles entered coaching as a graduate assistant at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham during the 1983-84 season. He was
with the Blazers for three seasons in that capacity. Giles
got his first full-time assistant coaching job at Jackson State
University. He remained on the staff at Jackson State University
when Andy Stoglin took over the program in 1989. In 1993-94,
Giles was promoted to associate head coach at Jackson State
University.
While at Jackson State University, Giles helped lead the team
to six Southwest Athletic Conference Tournament Finals, three
Southwest Athletic Conference Championships, three Southwest
Athletic Conference Tournament Championships, three NCAA Tournaments
and an NIT appearance.

of our Golden Bears family,” said James. “He brings
a wealth of knowledge and experience to our men’s basketball
program.”
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Giles graduated from Parker
High School in 1977. While at Parker, he was a member of the
1975 4-A State Title Team and had a runner-up finish in 1976.
As a senior, he was named All-Metro, All-City, All-Region and
City MVP, while leading Parker to a 23-7 season. He was named
one of the top 100 high school players by Street and Smith’s
Basketball Magazine.
With the Blazers during the 1980-81 season, Giles was co-captain
of the team that went 23-9 and made an NCAA Tournament Sweet
16 appearance. He finished the season averaging 11 points and
seven rebounds per contest, garnering Second-Team All-Conference
Honors. As a senior, he led the Blazers to a 25-6 season, a
Sun Belt Championship and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. He
garnered Second-Team All-Conference Honors for a second consecutive
season after averaging 10 points and seven rebounds per contest.
He was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team, the All-Tournament
Team, Player of the Week, and Eastern Airlines MVP in his final
two seasons. He finished his career with a record of 4-2 in
NCAA Tournament’s.
Giles was a fifth round draft pick by the New Jersey Nets
and played for the Wisconsin Flyers of the CBA in the 1982-83
season.
Giles earned his bachelor of science degree in physical education
from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his master’s
in physical education from Jackson State University.
He has two children, Chris (12) and Christina (9).
