SWAC Basketball Tournament Pairings Announced

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its pairings for the 2007 SWAC Men and Women’s Basketball Tournament. The four-day event will be held March 7-10, 2007 at Birmingham’s BJCC Arena.
In the men’s bracket, Mississippi Valley State (16-14) earned the top seed by virtue of a 13-5 conference mark and winning the regular season title. Jackson State (18-13, 12-6 SWAC) along with Grambling State (12-13, 10-8 SWAC) and Alcorn State (11-18, 10-8 SWAC) claim the remaining top seeds. Rounding out the five through eight seeds are Texas Southern (13-16, 9-9); Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-18, 9-9), Southern (10-20, 9-9) and Alabama State (10-19, 8-10).
In the women’s bracket, both Jackson State and Prairie View A&M finished with identical 14-4 conference mark; however, Jackson State 2-0 season mark against Prairie View (16-13) was the tiebreaker allowing the Lady Tigers (20-9) the number one seed. With Prairie View claiming the number two seed, the remaining top seeds went to Alabama A&M (17-12, 13-5 SWAC) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (15-13, 10-8 SWAC). Rounding out the five through eight seeds for the women were Alabama State (12-17, 9-9); Grambling State (11-18, 7-11); Southern (5-21, 5-13) and Mississippi Valley State (7-20, 4-14).
All games lead to the SWAC Championship games being played on Saturday, March 10. The Women’s Championship will play at 3 p.m., while the Men’s Championship is slated for a 5 p.m. tip. Both championships are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPNU.
