Birmingham, Ala. – Shelita Burns of
Jackson State University was selected as 2007 Southwestern Athletic
Conference’s Player of the Year, while Lacey Cormier’ of
Grambling State University was chosen as the Defensive Player
of the Year.
Burns, (6’1, Sr., F/C, Jackson, MS) was also named this
2007 Preseason Player of the Year. In her four years at JSU,
Burns averaged 15.1 points per game (4 th in SWAC), 8.2 rebounds
(4 th in SWAC), 1.2 assist and 1.5 steals per game. Burns also
ranks 3 rd in the SWAC in field-goal percentage, shooting 50.4
percent from the field.
Cormier (6’3, Sr., C, New Orleans, LA) was named defensive
player of the year for a third consecutive year. She is second
in the conference in rebounds (8.9), and also averages 3.04 blocked
shots per game (1 st in SWAC).
SWAC Freshman of the Year honors goes the Gaati Werema of
Prairie View A&M University. The 5-foot-9 forward from Orlando,
FL averaged 15.5 points per game (3 rd in SWAC), 10.2 rebounds
per game (1 st in S WAC) and 1.28 blocked shots (4 th in SWAC).
LaSharee Christian of Jackson State was picked as the conference’s
newcomer of the year. The 5-foot-6 guard from Bellflower, CA
was ranked 7 th in the SWAC in scoring (12.9 ppg.), 3 rd in
assist (3.79), 2 nd in steals (2.54).
Jackson State, Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M each
have two all-conference selections. Grambling, Arkansas- Pine
Bluff, Alcorn and Mississippi Valley each have one selection.
Joining Burns in first team honors are Christian Malone of
Alabama A&M, LaSharee Christian of Jackson State, Rasaan
Powell of Alcorn State and Gaati Werema of Prairie View A&M.
Malone ranks second in the conference in assists (3.90 apg.)
and 1 st in free throw percentage (82.9). Christian was also
tied for 6 th in S WAC in 3-point FG percentage and ranked 9
th in 3-point FG made (1.18). Powell finished the regular season
as the conference’s leading scoring for a second consecutive
season (16.8 ppg.) She was also ranked fifth in rebounds (7.6
rpg.).
