SIAC announces 2006 Football All Conference Team, All Academic Team & Superlative Awards

Tucker, GA – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the SIAC Football Coaches Association have announced their All Conference Football Team, All Academic Team and Superlative Awards for the 2006 season. Headlining the list is Jacoby Jones of Lane College, who was Offensive Player of the Year and SIAC MVP, and Alton Pettway of Albany State University, who was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Both Jones and Pettway also took home first team honors. Coach Johnny Cole of Lane College was named Coach of the Year.

The first team all conference included seven members from the 2006 pre-season team including Jacoby Jones, Alton Pettway, Joe Kegler, Jeff Nweke, Titus Curry, Michael Porter, and Brandon Larkin. Jacoby Jones took home first team honors at three positions including Wide Receiver, Punt Returner and Kick Returner. Jones led the conference in receiving yards per game (74.7), receptions per game (6.18), receiving touchdowns (6) all purpose yards per game (189.9) punt return average (13.8), was the only SIAC athlete to return a kickoff for a touchdown (2) and was second in the conference in scoring having scored 10 touchdowns (1 rushing, 6 receiving, 3 Returns). Alton Pettway, won the Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year, after leading his team to a fourth consecutive SIAC Championship. Pettway led the conference in sacks (14.5) and tackles for a loss (21.5) and finished the season with 53 tackles. Freshman of the Year honors went to Nathaniel Samas of Fort Valley State University. Johnny Cole, of Lane College, turned his team around from a winless season in 2005 to an 8-3 record and nearly the conference title in 2006 which led to his pick as the 2006 Coach of the Year. Benedict College led all schools with 8 representatives on the All Conference teams followed by Fort Valley State University with 7 and Kentucky State University and Clark Atlanta University who each had 6 representatives.

Defense highlighted the SIAC All Academic Team with seven out of the eleven players playing a defensive position. Martin Degazon of Benedict is the only returning All Academic team member with a 3.93 Grade Point Average. Casper Kamau, a sophomore majoring in Business Management at Kentucky State University, led all SIAC football players with a 4.0 GPA. Benedict College led all schools with four (4) members named to the All Academic Team.
