SWAC 2006-07 Preseason Men’s Basketball Honors announced

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its men’s basketball preseason honors for the upcoming 2006-07 season. In a poll conducted by the conference office in which votes were received from the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, Jackson State guard Trey Johnson was chosen as the preseason player of the year.

Johnson – a 6-5 senior shooting guard from Jackson, MS – was one of the premier players in the conference last season. He averaged 23.5 points per contest – good for second in the conference and 10th in the nation. He also averaged 4.8 rebounds (16th in SWAC), 2.28 assists (11th in SWAC), and 1.44 steals (9th in SWAC). He shot 75.0 percent from the free throw line (6th in SWAC) along with 44.1 percent (1st in conference) and 45.5 percent from the field (11th in conference).

The preseason defensive player of the year selection was Alabama A&M’s Mickell Gladness. Gladness – the conference leader in blocked shots averaging 2.96 blocks per contest also ranked him 12th in the nation.

Joining Johnson on the preseason first-team were Alcorn State guard Delvin Thompson, forwards William Byrd (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and Christopher Moore (Texas Southern), and Mississippi Valley State center Ronald Alexander.

Receiving second-team honors were guards Andrew Hayles (Alabama State) and Andre Ratliff (Grambling State), forwards Deforrest Riley-Smith (Southern) and Richard Lott (Alabama State) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff center Jarvis Gunter.
