SWAC 2006-07 Preseason Women’s Basketball Honors released

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its women’s basketball preseason honors for the upcoming 2006-07 season. In a poll conducted by the conference office in which votes were received from the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, Jackson State forward/center Shelita Burns was named the preseason player of the year.

Burns – a 6-foot-1 senior from Jackson, MS – finished last season among the conference leaders in several categories. She finished her sophomore campaign averaging 16.7 points (4th in SWAC), 6.8 rebounds (7th in SWAC) and 1.4 steals per contest while shooting 47.4 percent (4th in SWAC) from the floor and tallying 32.97 minutes per game (6th in SWAC).
A two-time SWAC defensive player of the year, Grambling State’s Lacey Cormier’ was named the conference preseason defensive player of the year for the second straight season. Last season, the 6-foot-3 senior center from New Orleans, LA, averaged 7.7 points, 8.2 rebounds (3rd in SWAC), and 2.62 blocks (1st in SWAC & 12th in the nation).
The preseason first team honorees include guards Christen West (Mississippi Valley State) and Shante Stanford (Jackson State). In the frontcourt are Burns, forward Portia Wilson (Mississippi Valley State) and center Rasaan Powell (Alcorn State).
Receiving second-team accolades were center Fredreika Lewis (Southern), forwards Dominique Headd (Grambling State) and Carena Easley (Jackson State) along with guards Shante Robinson (Alabama State), Sanora Cole (Grambling State) and Arica Green (Arkansas-Pine Bluff).
