Avery named compliance coordinator/assistant
volleyball coach at JCSU

CHARLOTTE, NC – - Alexis Avery, of Hampton, Va. has been
named the new Compliance Coordinator for Johnson C. Smith University
Intercollegiate Athletics, a position that has been elevated
to full-time status. Avery comes to JCSU by way of the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) where she served
as the administrative assistant for the past two years. In addition,
Avery will serve as the assistant volleyball coach.

Avery will assist the JCSU coaches, administrators and student-athletes
navigate the complex, rapidly evolving rules and regulations
of the CIAA and the NCAA. She will also be responsible for
ensuring that all of JCSU’s student-athletes are eligible
to participate in intercollegiate athletics according to NCAA
regulations.
“With the arrival of Alexis as our first full-time compliance
officer, JCSU will soon have a system to support its student-athletes
and sports programs that is second-to-none,” said Athletics
Director Stephen Joyner, Sr.
Avery began as an intern for the CIAA in May of 2003 until
being named full-time January of 2005. While at the conference
office, Avery handled several responsibilities including policy
and procedures manuals, all-conference teams for all sports,
programs for all sport banquets, data analysis, and researched
compliance issues.
Avery received her bachelor’s degree from Hampton University
in sport management in 2005. While at Hampton, Avery was a
four year starter on the Lady Pirates volleyball team. She
was named defensive player of the year (2003-2005) and in her
senior year, she was the team captain. She is currently completing
requirements for a master’s degree in sports management.
