Willie E. Gary donates $50,000 to Saint
Augustine’s College Football Team
September 22, 2006
Raleigh, NC-Famed attorney Willie E. Gary
has a history of giving back to historically
black colleges and universities and Thursday,
September 21, 2006, was no exception.
Gary announced he will donate $50,000 to the
Saint Augustine’s College Football Team.
The announcement was made during a speech at
the college’s 2006 Fall Convocation where
Gary was guest speaker.
Falcons’ Head Coach Michael Costa, in
attendance with his football squad, was pleasantly
surprised by the contribution. He says the
money will help the program, which is in its
fifth season since football was reinstated
in 2002.
“This is truly a blessing,” said
Costa, the 2005 CIAA Football Coach of the
Year. “We are blessed to receive a donation
and blessed to hear a wonderful speech that
the students needed to hear. A messenger was
sent today.” The reason for the contribution
is simple, according to Gary. Once a migrant
worker, Gary says an HBCU helped him achieve
the American Dream. Through hard work and determination,
Attorney Gary graduated from Shaw University
and became a multi-millionaire lawyer and cable
television executive. Gary believes that HBCUs
such as Saint Augustine’s College play
an important role in the lives of college students. “I
have an obligation to give back to HBCUs and
Saint Augustine’s College has been in
the forefront of educating young black men
and women,” Gary said.
