SIAC Interim Commissioner departs

Tucker, GA. –Dr. Benjamin F. Payton, Chair of the SIAC Council of Presidents and President of Tuskegee University, has announced that George Mategakis, Interim Commissioner/Director of Championships for the SIAC, has tendered his resignation, effective December 31, 2008. Mr. Mategakis has accepted the position of Director of Championships with the California Community College Athletic Association based in Sacramento, California.

The Executive Committee of the Council of Presidents held an emergency meeting on Monday and named Harry Stinson III, who has served the SIAC as Director of Communications and Marketing since 2005, to serve as Acting Commissioner, effective January 1, 2009. Stinson will serve until the Search Committee of the Council of Presidents completes its work and recommends a person to the Council to serve as permanent SIAC Commissioner. The goal is to name a person to this position before the end of January 2009.
On behalf of the entire SIAC Council of Presidents, Dr. Payton expressed appreciation to George Mategakis for his conscientious service over the past eight months as Interim Commissioner and in other roles since June 2003. He also expressed appreciation on behalf of the entire Council to Harry Stinson for taking on this added responsibility during this interim period. Additionally, Dr. Payton acknowledged the work of the entire SIAC Conference staff and expressed appreciation to them as well for their work during this period of transition.
“I would like to thank the Council of Presidents, athletic department administrators, coaches and student-athletes for their support and friendship the last 5 ½ years. Although the last eight months have been filled with challenges, I am honored and privileged to have been allowed to serve the SIAC as Interim Commissioner. We have made a lot of progress in re-establishing the SIAC as a major contender in Division II. The staff and I have taken the approach of doing things right and I believe the new incoming Commissioner will appreciate the progress we have made during the last eight months and continue to move the SIAC to regional and national excellence both on and off the field of sport”, Mategakis stated.
Mr. Mategakis has served the SIAC in numerous capacities including special assistant to the commissioner, director of championships, sports information liaison, special events director, CHAMPS/Life Skills director and SAAC advisor. His work as Interim Commissioner began on April 15, 2008.
Stinson has served the SIAC since 2005. Prior to his appointment with the SIAC, he served as the Director of Operations for the Georgia Games, an affiliate branch of the AAU, and as a General Manager of the World Boxing League. Mr. Stinson is a former student-athlete from Florida State University and received his Master’s degree in Sports Administration from Georgia State University.
