Albany State wins SIAC baseball championshipApril 22, 2001Albany, GA - Albany State University has won the 2001 SIAC Baseball Championship. The Golden Rams defeated the Kentucky State University Thorobreds, 7-5, in the championship game on Saturday, April 21, at Golden Rams Park. The Golden Rams are coached by first-year ASU coach Stanley Stubbs, who becomes the first coach to win back-to-back titles at two SIAC schools. Stubbs' Paine College team won the 2000 championship. "We are very excited about our victory and claiming of the championships. I am thrilled that I was a part of this 2001 team," Stubbs said. "We have a very talented team and look forward to keeping the title here in Rams country!" Currently ranked seventh in the South region, the Golden Rams won their last SIAC title in 1994. During post-game awards ceremonies, ASU's Darian Murphy received the tournament's Most Valuable Player and the Outstanding Hitter awards. Marquis Chachere was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Fielder and Stubbs was named Coach of the Year. Murphy, Dedrick Murphy, Ronnie Richardson and Marquis Chachere were named to the 2001 All-Tournament team. In other SIAC Spring championship action, the Fort Valley State University women's Track and Field and Softball teams won first place honors in each sport, and the Morehouse College Track and Field and Tennis teams won first place honors.
