North All-Stars sweep South Stars in Black College Basketball Classic

Boxscore and play-by-play: women's game | men's game

Baltimore, MD - The North All-Stars swept the South team at the 6th Annual National Car Rental Black College All-Star Basketball Classic Saturday at the Hill Field House at Morgan State University. The North women, made up of players from the MEAC and CIAA beat the South women, 84-61. The similarly constructed North men topped the South team of SIAC, SWAC and independent players, 98-77.

Both victors used powerful inside games to knock off their opponents.

In the women's game, the North Stars took advantage of a significant height advantage to open the game with eight straight points before the South team scored. Sporting a roster that included three players over 6-1 (Sharon Palmer (6-2) of Johnson C. Smith, Malveata Johnson (6-3) of N.C. A&T and Julie Tarrance (6-5) of Livingstone), the North women outscored the South by 50-30 in the paint. The South's tallest player was 6-0 Tameka McKenzie of Claflin College. Four North players finished with double-figure rebounds with Tarrance grabbing a game-high 12 boards. Johnson, Morgan State's Shakira Smith and Coppin State's Keisha Brooks all had 11 rebounds.

Delaware State's Chavonne Stewart earned MVP honors scoring 16 points and grabbing 7 rebounds off the bench. The South was led by Cherea Wood who finished the game with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The men's game provided another demonstration of inside strength for the North squad. Using a 14-0 run midway through the first half, the North Stars pulled away from their opponents to cruise to victory.Game MVP Joe Brown of Coppin State led all scorers with 16 points. N.C. Central's Jimmy Boston grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

The North outscored the South, 50-30, in points in the paint.

The South team had a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring 14 points but couldn't overcome the North's inside game. Miles College's Dwayne Marable scored 13 of his points in the second half to share the South scoring lead with Southern University's Courtney Henderson and Tennessee State's Jamie Roberts. Roberts was 3 of 6 from the three-point line.
