Morris Brown names Ellington as Athletics DirectorFebruary 8, 2001ATLANTA - Morris Brown College has named the school's Head Men's Basketball Coach and former Harlem Globetrotter, Russell Ellington, as its Athletic Director. He served on an interim basis for two weeks before being selected to hold the permanent position. "It's a big challenge. There are a lot of issues we have to visit immediately," Coach Ellington said. "I've been busy trying to see what strategies we're going to use to attack them." Ellington also has been busy with his Head Basketball Coach responsibilities, but says he's up to that challenge as well. "We only have four more games in the season, so that can be easily handled. The longer trips I'll have to miss, but it's in capable hands with my assistant coaches," Ellington said. As Morris Brown's Head Basketball Coach, Ellington's team, for the first time, is playing a rigorous Division I schedule. Coach Ellington graduated from Morris Brown College in 1960, where he received a degree in biology and was a member of the basketball, football, baseball and track teams. He landed a spot on the Harlem Globetrotters in 1961 and traveled with the team until 1965. Before returning to his alma mater in 1997, Coach Ellington served as Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Savannah Technical Institute (STI) from 1993-1997. During his tenure at STI, Coach Ellington was credited with starting the institute's athletic program. Prior to his STI career, Coach Ellington coached the Harlem Globetrotters from 1985-1993, before serving as the Athletic Director for Savannah State University from 1976-1985.
