Tuskegee picked to repeat in SIAC football

July 29, 2001

Atlanta, GA - The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) held its’ Football Kickoff Luncheon where the 2001 Pre-Season All-SIAC Team and the predicted order of finish were announced. This is the first year that the luncheon has been held as an stand-along event. In past years, the event was held in conjunction with the league’s summer meeting. The luncheon was held at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel.

Kentucky State University’s senior running back, Alvon Brown (6'0, 212), the SIAC Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000, heads up the 2001 SIAC Pre-Season All-Conference Team. Brown, who rushed for over 1500 yards and score twenty touchdowns last season was a sure pick for the pre-season squad. Along with being named Player of the Year and Offensive Back of the Year for the past two seasons, Brown added the SIAC Offensive Player of the Year to his resume in 2000. Brown set an NCAA single game rushing record last year, rushing for 405 yards against Western Kentucky.

Kelvin Powell (235, 6'0), a senior linebacker and the SIAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2000, was also named to the team. Powell was the league’s third leading tackler netting 114 total tackles. He also recorded two quarterback sacks.

Tuskegee had the most selection on this years’ team with nine Golden Tigers getting the nod. Clark Atlanta, Fort Valley and Kentucky State added three each to the team, while Albany State and Morehouse added two each to the team. Lane and Miles both added one member to the all-conference team.
