Coppin State names Marcie Hickey as softball coach

June 4, 2001

BALTIMORE - Coppin State College has hired Marcie Hickey as head softball coach.

Hickey comes to Coppin after serving two seasons as assistant softball coach at the University of Rhode Island, where she helped the Rams accumulate a 50-60-1 record during her tenure. This past season the Rams reached the championship game of the Atlantic 10 softball tournament before falling to the 22nd-ranked Massachusetts Minutewomen.

A former standout at Bloomsburg University, Hickey was a second-team All-American shortstop in 1997. She was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection four times while receiving All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors three times. Hickey recorded a .361 career batting average and is second all-time in runs scored at Bloomsburg with 171.

"Marcie has a great understanding of softball that will carry the program to a new level of competition," said athletics director Ron "Fang" Mitchell. "She will become a key factor in our commitment to be successful in Olympic sports."The Washingtonville, Penn, native earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Bloomsburg in 1999.

Hickey replaces Billie Wilson, who resigned from the position but will continue to serve Coppin as associate head women's basketball coach, a position she was promoted to last month.

The Coppin State softball team registered a 5-30 record this past season while finishing fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division.
