Central State's Check steps away from coaching duties

Theresa Check, head women's basketball coach and athletics director at Central State University has announced that she will give up her coaching position to concentrate on her duties as AD.

"I believe that this is the best time for this transition," said Check. "I want to be in a position to devote all my energies toward rebuilding and restoring our athletic program to championship levels. And, of course, this means toward the reinstatement of football here at CSU."

Check has recommended to CSU President John Garland that here long time assistant, Patricia Tramble succeed her as head coach. "I believe that Coach Pat will continue the traditions of the Lady Marauders program, but with her own touch, of course," Check stated.

"Theresa is making the decision because she is committed to the resurgence of CSU athletics and our future growth," said President Garland. "As a full-time athletic director, Theresa will have the task of fully evaluatng the CSU athletic programs with the aim of developing a plan to restore CSU's rich athletic tradition, which obviously, includes the University's football program."

Check has guided the Lady Marauders for a total of 17 years and picked up her 400th career coaching victory in January. She has had 15 consecutive winning seasons and is the winninget Central State University coach with a .776 winning percentage.

Her teams have made 12 straight appearances in the NAIA Division I Women's Tournament.

She is a four-time NAIA District Coach of the Year and was named NAIA Division I Coach of the Year in 1993 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
