Hampton University Releases 2001 Football Schedule
Five home games highlight the schedule

Hampton, VA - Hampton University Director of Athletics, Dennis Thomas, released the 2001 Pirate Football Schedule with a balance of 6 road and 5 home games, in Armstrong Stadium. The Pirates under the direction of 10th year head coach and current AFCA President, Joe Taylor, embarks on a 11-game schedule featuring non-conference opponents from the Atlantic 10 and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), in addition to conference powerhouses such as Florida A&M, Howard, North Carolina A&T State and Bethune-Cookman College.

The season opener will pit the Pirates against the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire, September 1, at the Cowell Stadium in Durham, New Hampshire.

"The Wildcats of UNH will be a good opener," says Coach Taylor. "It. s always good to face a tough competitive in the opener. It creates a stronger work ethic in the program and gives us an accurate evaluation of our talent level".

Afterward the Pirates will travel to our nations capital, Washington, D.C., to take on the Bison of Howard University, September 8, for their first MEAC conference match-up of the season. After open date on September 15, the Pirates will travel back to Giant Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, to take on state rival, Virginia State University, September 22, in the New York Urban League Classic.

"It. s always good to participate in the New York Urban League Classic," remarked Coach Taylor. "To be in the media MECA of the world creates great exposure for the team, athletic department and the University."

The Pirates will open at home with MEAC opponent Delaware State University, September 29, followed by the University of Rhode Island, October 6.

A 15-minute trip to Norfolk sets up the Pirates next contest against the Spartans of Norfolk State University in the annual "Battle of the Bay Classic", October 13, at Price Stadium.

The 2001 Homecoming will welcome the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University, October 20, followed by another home contest against the 2000 MEAC Champions, Florida A&M University, October 23.

The Pirates will then travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, to compete with the Wildcats of Bethune Cookman College, November 3, and then travel back to Greensboro, North Carolina, to face the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University, November 10.

The Pirates will once again wrap up the regular season with the Bears of Morgan State University, November 17, in Armstrong Stadium.

"The quest has not change," states Coach Taylor. "As a team we must work daily on our discipline, work ethic and character. We must continue to understand that you can. t be a champion on Saturday unless you work on being a champion everyday"
