Saint Augustine's sweeps Division II Indoor Track Titles

Saint Augustine's College captured the 2001 NCAA men's and women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 9-10, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.

The Falcons and Lady Falcons squads used multiple placements in sprint and jumping field events to outscore their opponents.  St. Aug's men amassed 74 points to outscore New York Tech (48) and Abilene Christian (47).  The Lady Falcons outdistanced Abilene Christian 63-48 to capture the women’s title.

St. Augustine's Tim Rusan, who was named Southeast Region Athlete of the Year prior to the meet, won championships in two events, winning the long jump (7.58m) and triple jump (51' 1 3/4").  He was joined by teammates Maurice English (2nd place) and Dane Maglorie (6th place) in earning 20 of a possible 34 points in the long jump event.  Maglorie (7th place) and Roy Benjamin (4th) joined Rusan in scoring points in the triple jump.

North Carolina Central’s Jason Smoots win the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.26 seconds beating out St. Aug's Marquis Davis (2nd) and Bobby Ezell (5th).  Kentucky State's Reggie Hill finished 4th.

Eleven different athletes earned All-American honors for St. Augustine's by scoring points in  event finals.

Kia Davis led a strong showing in the 55 meter hurdles to propel the SAC women's squad.  Davis won the event in 7.66 seconds followed by Lakeya Williams (2nd) and Samaiyah Islam (5th).  Charlene Cummings, Southeast Region Athlete of the Year, placed second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and third in the 55 meter dash to personally contribute 20 points to the Lady Falcon's total.

The St. Aug women also won the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:44.69.  North Carolina Central came in third.

St. Aug coach George Williams earned national Coach of the Year honors for both men and women.
