Tuskegee University announces 11-game 2001 Schedule

March 28, 2001

Tuskegee, AL – The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers put their 2000 National Black College Football Championship on the line when they open the 2001 season September 1 against Winston-Salem State University.

The Golden Tigers defeated the Winston-Salem State Rams, the 2000 CIAA football champions, in the 2000 Pioneer Bowl.  The 12 -0 win over Winston-Salem gave the Golden Tigers their first 12 - 0, undefeated and untied season in the history of football at Tuskegee University.

Winston-Salem State University and Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, FL, are the only two new faces on the 11-game schedule.  Winston-Salem finished the 2000 season with a 9-3 record, and Edward Waters is fielding a football team for the first time in more than 30 years.

There are seven conference games on the Golden Tigers 2001 schedule, five of them at home in Cleve Abbott Memorial Alumni Bowl.  After opening against Winston-Salem State September 1, the home games include:  Edward Waters, September 22; Fort Valley State, October 20; Clark Atlanta, October 27; and Kentucky State, November 10.

The Golden Tigers entertain the Clark Atlanta Panthers at homecoming, this year scheduled for October 27.  The Tigers defeated the Panthers 23 -0 last season in the Greater LaGrange Classic.

The 66th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classis is set for October 13 in Columbus, GA, and the 78th Annual Turkey Day Classic against arch rival Alabama State is on again on November 22 in Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl.

The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers are the nation's winningest historically black college football team with 533 victories, including 7 National Black College Championships, 19 SIAC Championships, and 15 postseason Bowl appearances.

The 12 -0 season and National Black College Football Championship won head Coach Rick Comegy seven Coach of the Year honors – from the Sheridan Black Network, the Spirit Awards, Atlanta, GA's 100 Percent Wrong Club, the New York Amsterdam News, Black College Sports Page, the Birmingham (AL) Grid Forecasters, and the Washington, DC, Pigskin Club.
