| St. Augustine's men lead field into final day of D-2 track championships Lady Falcons yet to scoreMay 26, 2001 St. Augustine's College men's track team has literally jumped into first place entering the final day of the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in Edwardsville, IL. The Falcons, led by Tim Rusan, used strong finishes in the triple jump and long jump to lead the team rankings after two days of competition. Thursday, the first day of the championship, Rusan won the triple jump with a leap of 54' 4.75" and led a 1-2-5 finish for St. Aug. In the long jump on Friday, Rusan's 25' 2.75" effort was good enough to capture his second title of the meet. St. Aug's 1-4-6 finished gave the Falcons 40 points at the end of two days.
Morehouse College's Jesse Lipscombe won the high jump, leaping 7' 1.75" to give HBCUs their third title of the championship. The defending champion St. Augustine's women's team has yet to score but the Lady Falcons are well positioned to make a run on the final day. Saturday's finals will have several HBCU participants. Men's 400-Meter Relay Albany State, St. Augustine's and Livingstone have all qualified for the finals. Women's 400-Meter Relay Albany State, Fort Valley State, St. Aug and Lincoln (MO) will have teams in the finals. Men's 110-Meter Hurdles Derrick Blount, Virginia State and Eric Moss, Albany State will be in the finals. St. Augustine's D'Artanian D'Jean just missed making the finals by .003 seconds. Women's 100-Meter Hurdles Three hurdlers from St. Augustines will be in the finals. Kia Davis was the top qualifier. She will be joined by Samaiya Islam and Lakeya Williams. Fort Valley State's Sharlene Fuller had the second best time qualifying time in the event. Men's 400-Meter Dash Stephen Walker (FVSU), Stephan Demeritte (SAC) and David Driggers (MHC) will be in the finals. Women's 400-Meter Dash St. Augustine's Georgia Millings and Shakirah Rutherford join Ft. Valley's Nadia Douglas and N.C. Central's Kennisha Moten will be in the finals. Men's 100-Meter Dash HBCUs have placed five participants in the finals - Marquis Davis, St. Augustine's; Jordan Vaden, Livingstone; Reggie Hill, Kentucky State; Jason Smoots, N.C. Central and Robert Freeman, Clark Atlanta. Women's 100-Meter Dash Albany State's Creshendra Lane and St. Augustine's Carlene Cummings will be in the finals. Women's 800-Meter Run St. Augustine's Florencia Hunt was the top qualifier in this event. Men's 400-Meter Hurdles Ednol Rolle of St. Augustine's was the only HBCU qualifier in the finals of this event. Women's 400-Meter Hurdles The three HBCU qualifiers in the finals are Samaiyah Islam, St. Augustine's; Lurton Nobles; Albany State and Sharlene Fuller, Fort Valley State. Men's 200-Meter Dash Marquis Davis, St. Augustine's and Reggie Hill, Kentucky State have qualified for the finals. Women's 200-Meter Dash St. Aug's Kia Davis was the top qualifier and will be joined by teammate Georgia Mullings. Ft. Valley State's Nadia Douglas also qualified for the finals. Men's 1,600-Meter Relay St. Augustine's and Morehouse have teams in the finals. Women's 1,600-Meter Relay St. Augustine's and Albany State will have squads in the day's final event. |
