Hampton and Morgan State grab first round MEAC Track Leads
Three Pirates top decathlon; MSU's Tanic tops heptathlon

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Hampton University dominated the decathlon after the opening day of the 2001 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Pete Griffin Track on the Florida A&M University campus.

In men's action, the Hampton trio of Travis Ridley (3,711). Isaac Hilton (3,367) and Randy Ashton (3,212) are first, second and fourth after five events in the decathlon.

Maryland-Eastern Shore's Christopher Allotey (3,328) is third after the opening day. Florida A&M's Jason Montgomery (3,162 pts.) is fifth after Day One.

On the women's side, Morgan State's Severine Tanic (2.914 points) leads after four events, followed by Norfolk State's Eboni Henderson (2,839) and Florida A&M's Chigozi Chuku (2,818) placing second and third after Day One.

Friday's schedule opens at 9:00 a.m. at the Pete Griffin Track with events in the decathlon (110 hurdles) and the heptathlon (long jump), followed by opening ceremonies featuring a procession of teams from all 11 schools at 10:00 a.m.

Field events will usher in the main portion of the championships at 12 noon (Long Jump, High Jump, and Javelin. Shot Put and Discus), followed by trials and semifinals in several track events (400, 800, 100, 200. 100 and 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, men's steeplechase).
