Bethune-Cookman claims third-straight MEAC baseball title

May 13, 2001

DAYTONA BEACH -- Bethune-Cookman used the long ball at the most opportune times as the Wildcats claimed a three-peat of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Wildcats (26-32) now advance to the NCAA tournament May 25-27 at a site to be determined.

George Bailey, Treran Porter, and James Carter each went yard as the Wildcats pulled away from a 3-2 game with three in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Norfolk State closed to 3-2 on RBI singles from Todd Goodson and Charles Monroe, but the Wildcats answered with a two-out rally. Pedro Pichardo tripled and scored on a fielding error, then Carter took a 2-0 pitch over the left field scoreboard to plate him and Omar Ramos.

Travis Johnson picked up the victory, scattering four hits and striking out six.

B-CC players picked to the all-conference team include Jose Ramos, George Bailey, Micah Simmons, and Sharbel Torres. Head Coach Mervyl Melendez was named most outstanding coach.
