Retirement and position shift occur in Virginia State AthleticsOctober 10, 2000Two changes have taken place in the Athletics Department at Virginia State University. Interim Athletics Director Edward Cooper has announced his retirement, effective immediately and sports information director Greg Goings has had his position terminated. Cooper, who had spent 26 years at VSU in verious positions, had served as interim AD for the past three years. Under his leadership, the Trojan athletic program captured the C.H. Williams All-Sports award in 1999 and 2000. The award symbolizes the best overall men's athletic program in the CIAA. No word was given on Cooper's replacement. Speculation centers around Assistant Athletics Director Peggy Davis as a candidate for the top spot in VSU Athletics. Goings, who had been sports information director for 12 years, lost his position when the University abolished the sports information director post in favor of a position called Development Program Coordinator for Athletics. The new position is designed to concentrate more on fundraising than traditional sports information activities. Paul Williams, former sports information director at Virginia Union, has been hired in the new development program coordinator's position at Virginia State. He began work at VSU on September 25.
