State Hall of Fame growsAugust 12, 2000Orangeburg, SC - South Carolina State, which resurrected its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 after a 15-year hiatus, will add to the prestigious shrine this year when the University inducts 19 athletes and two coaches on Sept. 8. The ceremony is set for 7 p.m. ceremony at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The honor will also go to several administrators and persons who have made significant contributions to the Athletics Department. The SCSU women's basketball team, which captured the 1979 AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) championship, will receive special recognition during the ceremony. Two members of that team, Joyce Robinson Howard of Greenville and Orangeburg native Betty Smiley Stroman, will be among the enshrinees, bringing to five the number of players and coaches from that squad to be so honored. Heading the list of athletes are the late Marion Motley, a standout running back with the original Cleveland Browns; St. Matthews native Willie Joe Holman, who went on to an illustrious career with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League; Guy Hughes, a basketball star from the 60s, and Dr. Judith Sally, who was instrumental in revitalizing the women s basketball team in the mid 70s and served as its first captain. The two coaches are former SCSU assistant and head coach Bill Davis, now in a second stint as head football coach at Savannah State, and Victor E. Kerr, a retired SCSU swimming and tennis coach. The special category inductees will be released on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
