Howard fires two coaches and hires five others

September 14, 2000

Howard University has fired two women's basketball coaches while announcing five additions to its athletics coaching staff.

Sanya Tyler
Head women's basketball coach Sanya Tyler and assistant coach Jeff Williams have been terminated following an investigation into the program. According to a media statement released by Howard, the investigation "determined that members of the women's basketball coaching staff violated NCAA bylaws and University policies." Howard has also declared a unnamed student-athlete ineligible for an indefinite period.

Tyler was about to begin her 21st season. She had compiled a 298-266 career coaching record all at Howard. During her tenure, she had led the Lady Bison to 10 MEAC tournament championships, eight regular season championships and four NCAA tournament appearances.

The Lady Bison were MEAC regular season champions last year and lost to Hampton in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Williams had been an assistant coach for the past four years. The 1987 Howard alum played guard for the Bison. Prior to joining the Howard staff, he was an assistant at George Mason for four years after a one year stint as an assistant at South Carolina State.

Five new coaches have joined the athletics staff.

Alexis Seth has been named head women's lacrosse coach. Seth is a 1996 graduate of Wharton School of Business. She played collegiately at the University of Pennsylvania from 1993-96 and was an assistant at Howard last season.

Melinda Vaughn, a 1994 graduate of Cornell who served as a coach at George Washington has been named assistant women's lacrosse coach.

Curtis W. Butler, a 1959 Morris Brown grad, has been named women's bowling coach.
