Albany State University (ASU) athletic administrators finalized the Golden Rams 1999 Football Schedule on March 29. At least they thought they did.
Albany State has resumed its search for a team to complete an 11-game slate, Athletics Director Dan Land said. ASU and Fayetteville State University (FSU) verbally agreed to play in Albany, Ga., on Sept. 25, but later learned that FSU had signed a contract to play Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. on the same date, Land said.
"We completed our schedule by adding the Fayetteville State University Broncos from Fayetteville, N.C. But we found out from Onnidan, a black college sports marketing and information brokering company, that there was a conflict," Land said. So I called their AD, Horace Small, and he confirmed that they signed with Liberty."
FSU was offered a financial bonus for signing with Liberty, an offer Small could not refuse, according to Land.
"Fayetteville had our contract, but the Liberty athletic director must have called before Small signed our contract," Land said. "I don't blame him for taking the offer because fundraising is a major responsibility of athletic directors. I probably would have done the same thing. I just would have handled it differently."
