Tony Sheals named men's basketball coach at Delaware State

Dover, DE --- Delaware State University President Dr. William B. DeLauder has announced the appointment of Maurice "Tony" Sheals as Hornet head men's basketball coach. Sheals, 40, served the last two years as an assistant coach at Towson University.

From 1993 until 1997, he was the head coach at Bethune-Cookman College. "I am very pleased to appoint Tony Sheals as our men's head basketball coach," DeLauder said. "He brings outstanding leadership qualities to our program. He has demonstrated his ability as a coach and as a recruiter. I am impressed with his genuine concern for student-athletes and his commitment to building a top-notch program."

While at Bethune-Cookman, Sheals compiled an overall record of 45-65, including a 34-32 mark against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition. He was named MEAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading the Wildcats to a 9-7 MEAC record and a fourth place finish in the conference regular season standings. His 1995 and '97 Wildcat teams advanced to the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

Prior to his appointment as Bethune-Cookman's head coach, he was a Wildcat assistant coach during the 1992-93 season. From 1990-1992, Sheals compiled an overall record of 37-27 as the head coach at South Florida Community College. His 1991-92 team reached the championship game of the conference tournament.

Sheals was also a highly successful head coach at Kathleen High School in Lakeland, Florida, recording an overall record of 138-58 in six seasons at the school. His 1987 team was ranked number 18 in the USA TODAY National High School Poll. Sheals is a 1980 graduate of Bethune-Cookman, where he holds a bachelor's in physical education, health and recreation. He and his wife Marian have two children, Andrew, 10, and Marissa, 4.
