NCA&T Women's Basketball Coach Tim Abney Resigns

April 6, 1999

Greensboro, NC -- After 13 years on the job, Tim Abney has resigned as head women's basketball coach at North Carolina A&T. His resignation was effective Friday, April 1.

Abney had been at A&T for 20 years having served for seven years as assistant men's coach under Don Corbett before taking over the women's program prior to the 1986-87 season.

He compiled a 191-172 career record with a 10-18 mark this season. His teams won three MEAC regular season championships (1988, 1989 and 1990) and one tournament title (1994). Winning the 1994 MEAC Tournament Championship earned the Lady Aggies their first-ever NCAA Division I Women's Tournament berth.

This year seven of his players (Taura Barnes, Jamilla Elis, Ijunanya Holder, Janelle Jones, Stephanie Moss, Rekah Patterson and Latoya Wilson) were named to the MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Award List and his starting center, Malveata Johnson, was selected MEAC Player of the Year.
