N.C. Central Names Four Assistant Football Coaches

March 15, 1999

DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University has hired four assistant football coaches to join the staff of new head coach Rudy Abrams.

Sam Washington, who coached under former NCCU head coach Larry Little for six seasons, was retained as the defensive coordinator. Antoine Rivens (assistant head coach/offensive line) and Kienese Boulware (linebacker coach/instructor) are reunited with Abrams after working with the head coach at Livingstone College. Butch Posey comes to NCCU via Johnson C. Smith to coach the defensive line.

Washington was a two-time All-SWAC defensive back at Mississippi Valley State University, where he graduated in 1982 with a degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He went on to play in the National Football League for five years, four with the Pittsburgh Steelers and his last season with the Cincinnati Bengals. Washington has also coached at Johnson C. Smith and Bethune-Cookman.

Rivens was a three year starter on the offensive line at the University of South Carolina, where he graduated in 1992 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He played professionally with the Charlotte Rage Arena Football team in 1994, and the Shreveport Pirates of the Canadian Football League in 1995. Rivens joined the Livingstone football coaching staff in 1995 as the offensive line coach and special teams coordinator, boasting an all-conference lineman in each of his four season with the Blue Bears.

Boulware played two seasons (1993 & 1994) as an inside linebacker at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, before his football career was shortened by the discovery of a spinal cord abnormality. He remained on the Tar Heel sideline as a student coach for two seasons, working with the linebackers and defensive linemen. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in May 1997 with a degree in Organizational Communication, Boulware coached linebackers for two seasons (1997-98) at Livingstone College.

Posey was a safety at Morgan State University before transferring to Slippery Rock University, where he completed his degree in Political Science in 1992. Posey began his coaching career as an assistant head coach and history teacher at Clairton High School in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. He stayed in Pennsylvania to coach defensive linemen at Edinboro University (1997) and East Stroudsburg University (1996), and linebackers at his alma mater Slippery Rock University (1995). Posey spent last season at Johnson C. Smith University as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
