Savannah State University has named Anita Walsh to lead the women's basketball and volleyball programs into the 1999-2000 season. Walsh, a native of Atlanta, is a 1993 graduate of SSU.
"I think that Ms. Walsh will do a great job for us," said Dr. Jerome H. Fitch, SSU athletics director. "She has a natural love for the institution and aspecial place in her heart for the women's basketball program. She was a part of the winning tradition that was established at SSU in the early nineties and she has gone on to establilsh her own winning tradition at Stillman. Not only am I impressed with her success in athletics, but I am also impressed with her successes in her other endeavors."
Walsh comes to Savannah State from Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she coached women's basketball and assisted with volleyball at Stillman College. The Stillman Lady Tigers posted a 19-6 record in 1998. While rebuilding the women's basketball program, Walsh also taught courses in the Health and Physical Education Department. She developed a fast pitch softball program at the college in 1998.
Prior to accepting the coaching job at Stillman, she worked for First Data Corporation of Atlanta, a Fortune 500 corporation, as a collections manager. During that time, she was a volunteer events staffer for the American Basketball League's Atlanta franchise.
Walsh began her coaching career during her senior year at Savannah State when an injury kept her from playing. She remained with the team as a student assistant coach. That year (1993) the team posted their best record in 1 years, 24-5. From 1990-92, the years that Walsh played at SSU, the Lady Tigers did not have a losing season and posted a three-year record of 53-29.
