Southern University's Michael Woods was named to the YSN.COM All-American Baseball Team Saturday in Orlando, Florida. The SWAC Freshman of the Year's selection was announced at an awards banquet concluding the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars at Disney's Wild World of Sports.
The YSN.COM All-American Team is baseball's equivalent of the McDonald's All-American Basketball Team and represents the top 11 amateur baseball players 18 years old and younger in the United States. The players selected to the team were chosen by a selection committee based on the players' year round performance, their performance in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, and input from the coaches from the major youth baseball organizations.
"The YSN.COM All-American Team players represent the next generation of college and professional baseball stars", said Tom Brasuell, National Program Manager for Major League Baseball. "The talent and potential of these players ensures that we will be seeing their names in the highlights for many years to come."
"Youth Sports Network is very proud to support amateur sports activities and participants," says Dan Purner, Vice President, Youth Sports Network. "Through our ysn.com site, we highlight many of the spectacular youth sports performances that occur every day; the YSN.COM All-American Baseball Team acknowledges the consistent high caliber performances of these young athletes. We are honored to be involved with USA Baseball and Major League Baseball in identifying and highlighting the top amateur baseball players across the country."
Woods, a second baseman, played for the National Amateur Baseball Federation team in the tournament. He batted .313 in the five game, round-robin format tournament.
During the regular season, Woods ranked third in the SWAC in batting with a .404 average and led the conference in doubles with 19. The Baton Rouge native was named Freshman of the Year in the SWAC in addition to earning a spot on the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. His Jaguar team won the SWAC championship with a 28-13 record and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.
