| Alcorn Lady Braves Track Team Honored by The City of VicksburgJune 13, 2000ALCORN STATE, Miss. Alecia Shields-Gadson, Alcorn State Universityhead track coach along with the women's track team was honored by boththe City of Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Alumni Chapter of Alcorn StateUniversity. The team was given a proclamation by the City of Vicksburgwhich stated that the month of May will be dedicated to the Lady Bravestrack team. This took place at the monthly alumni chapter meeting onFriday evening at the Elk's Club in Vicksburg. The Alcorn State University women's track team won the school's firstever Southwestern Athletic Conference team title at the 2000 SWAC trackmeet at Raymond High School in Raymond, Mississippi last month. TheLady Braves as a team blew the rest of the teams away by scoring 153.50points with Alabama State finishing second with 127 points and thedefending SWAC champs Southern in third place with 125 points.Shields-Gadson also earned SWAC Coach-of-the-Year honors at this meet asthe Lady Braves placed in 15 of the 18 events with athletes placingfourth or better in 17 events. Shields-Gadson was rather excited about the honor that her programreceived over the weekend. "It feels good, it is a testament to theaccomplishments that we have had and to the hard work that we havedone. Like all accolades, everyone enjoys getting noticed," she said. Dr. John Walls, president of the school's Vicksburg Alumni chapterspoke very highly of the Lady Braves women's track team and theathletics department. "The Vicksburg Alumni Chapter is proud of all ofthe athletic programs at Alcorn. We have made a special financialcontribution to both the university and to athletics. We are proud ofCoach Shields in what she has done in the past few years. As I said tothe body here tonight, I remember when she came to Alcorn, she hasbrought us a mighty long way as a team and I think that is great."
