"(Henry) Frazier is the natural choice for the Bulldogs," said Bowie State University President Dr. Wendell Holloway. "It gives me great pleasure to welcome home a man who is a proven winner and who led Bowie State to one of its finest moments on the gridiron. The time is short before the season starts but I know he will have the team ready to face the challenge." Holloway also commended the hard work of the search committee and thanked the many qualified and talented applicants who were considered.
Frazier's athletic credentials include having quarterbacked the Bulldogs from 1986-89 and leading the team to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in his senior season.
"I'm just so happy to be able to return to a place that holds so many special memories for me, and I look forward to helping create those same kind of wonderful memories for the young men on this team," Frazier said. "With the number of talented players and the veterans that we have returning, we should be able to contend for the championship this year.
Frazier is also no stranger to Prince George's County and its players. For the past five years he coached the Central High School football team, accumulating a 20-30 record, and he is coming off a personal-best 6-4 campaign in 1998. He honed his administrative skills as well, working as the Assistant Athletic Director since 1994.
Frazier has not been far removed from Bowie State since his playing days ended, however. He remained on as an assistant coach, serving through the 1992 season, working with wide receivers, running backs and the special teams unit.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Bowie State in physical education in 1993, worked as an activity coordinator for the Upward Bound program on campus in 1998 and received his Master's degree in School Administration/Supervision this past May.
For the players that might worry about having to learn a new system in two weeks before the season starts, they shouldn't. Frazier is willing to use the short summer to ease into his leadership by adapting to the team's style of play.
"We'll have to adjust to one another, but it is much easier for me to learn how they do things, than to bring in a whole new system all at once. I'll try to keep as many things the same, but at the same time adding my own twist to them," he concluded.
Frazier, a member of Omega Psi Phi, Inc., has been married for two and a half years to Lanier Turner-Frazier, has four daughters and currently resides in Laurel, MD.
