Bowie State Hires New Men's Basketball Coach

September 9, 1999

Bowie, MD ---After an exhaustive three-month search, the Bowie State University Bulldogs named Luke D'Alessio as their new head men's basketball coach.

"With the number of qualified coaches who applied for the position, the process was bound to take some time," said Bowie State University President Dr. Wendell Holloway. "We are very, very satisfied that we have found the right individual in Coach D'Alessio to lead our program in the development of our student-athletes both on and off the court," he added.

D'Alessio joins the Bulldogs as a part-time coach after spending six years at Catonsville Community College, during which time he turned the program from a perennial also-ran into a nationally-respected one. In those six years, D'Alessio posted a record of 124-52.

"I feel great and look forward to the opportunity and the challenge ahead of me," said D'Alessio. "The first year you need to put things in place including earning the trust and respect of the players and vice versa. One of my first goals is to get to .500. You have to get to .500 before you can do anything."

D'Alessio knows about winning. In the past four years, Catonsville teams have won no less than 23 games and have been ranked in the top five nationally in each of those seasons.

D'Alessio has been recognized for the team's performances as well. He won the Maryland Junior College titles in 1996, 1997 and 1999, and was named Maryland Junior College Coach of the Year in each of those seasons.

D'Alessio knows the game first-hand. As a player, he helped Catholic University advance to the conference finals in 1983. At the guard spot, D'Alessio was a record setter, averaging 6.9 assists a game over his career, while helping guide four of his teammates to 1,000 career points. He earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Catholic University in 1983.
