Coppin State Names DuBose Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

July 1, 1999

BALTIMORE -- Coppin State University has hired former Delaware State coach Jimmy DuBose as assistant men's basketball coach.

"I think its a great opportunity for us to bring aboard someone of Jimmy's experience and expertise," said head coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell, also Coppin's athletics director.

"He understands the conference, and he's an excellent recruiter. I've always thought he had a great demeanor and a good way with people."

DuBose, 39, joins the Coppin staff after two seasons as head coach at Delaware State following three years as a Hornets assistant.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native, who has 13 years of combined collegiate and professional experience, also spent a season as assistant coach of the Westchester (N.Y.) Stallions of the United States Basketball League.Prior to his stint with the Stallions, he was an assistant at LIU-C.W. Post for two years, helping guide the team to a 45-15 mark. In 1994, the Pioneers advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen.

DuBose was head coach at Molloy College for two years (1990-92), laying the foundation for the school's eventual move to NCAA Division II. In his first year at Molloy, the team went 10-16 following two straight winless seasons, and DuBose was named Seagram's Small College Coach of the Year.

DuBose has also served as an Amateur Athletic Union coach in New York, where he worked with current NBA players Kenny Anderson, Jamal Mashburn and Stephon Marbury during their high school years.

The addition of DuBose gives Coppin one of the most seasoned staffs in the league. Mitchell and assistant Derek Brown have been together for 21 years, the past 13 at Coppin.

DuBose, a graduate of New York Tech ('83), replaces Eric Skeeters, now an assistant at Youngstown State.
