BALTIMORE -- Coppin State College women's basketball coach Jennie Hall has announced the hiring of Ollie Matson and Charron Beckham as assistant coaches, who join first assistant Billie Harris, to round out her staff for the 1999-2000 season.

Matson, a 1980 graduate of Pepperdine University, has been an assistant at Edmonson High School for the past two years. Prior to that he was an assistant at Randallstown High School, helping the Rams to an appearance in the state semifinals in 1996.

The Los Angeles native, who is the son of NFL Hall-of-Famer Ollie Matson Sr., averaged 15 points and 8.8 rebounds during his collegiate career and was a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection. He currently ranks 10th on Pepperdine's all-time scoring chart (1,501) and is fourth in rebounding (884).

Matson was drafted by the Phoenix Suns of the NBA in the seventh round in 1979 but never played in the NBA. He played professionally for nine years, including stints in the CBA, Mexico and the Philippines.

Matson, who currently works full-time as a special education teacher at Old Court Middle School in Randallstown, Md., will be primarily responsible for film exchange, conditioning and monitoring the team's academic progress.

Beckham, a 1999 graduate of Coppin State, played basketball and softball for the Lady Eagles. She averaged 0.3 points and 0.7 rebounds in two seasons on the hardwood and hit .195 for the softball team last season.

The Largo, Md., native will be primarily responsible for working with the team's guards and handling various administrative duties.

Harris, who served as second assistant last year, was recently promoted to first assistant and will be the Lady Eagles' primary recruiter.
