The City of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Elizabeth City State University have announced that the Down East Football Classic events scheduled for September 30-October 2 have been cancelled due to Hurricane Floyd and its severe impact on the Rocky Mount area. The football game featuring Elizabeth City State University and North Carolina Central University will be moved to Elizabeth City on Saturday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m.
"We are truly concerned that the City of Rocky Mount focus its attention on the safety and welfare of its citizens. The Down East Football Classic is an annual event and we look forward to returning in 2000," said Dr. Edward McLean, ECSU athletics director.
The City of Rocky Mount experienced major flooding which included the stadium and field where the game was to be played. Mayor Fred Turnage stated that the steering committee members and many others had spent a great deal of time planning for the event, however, Hurricane Floyd brought such devastation to the citizens of Rocky Mount, it was in the best interest of the City not to host the game on October 2.
Tickets purchased for the game or other events can be returned to the ticked outlet where purchased for a refund.
